Linking to IOP Journals with STACKS™
Creating links to IOP journals is easy using the STACKS linking protocol
developed by IOP Publishing.
There are three ways of enabling your links to IOP journals using STACKS:
Since IOP abstracts are available freely to all, your users will be able to
access the bibliographic citation and abstract of any online article published
by IOP Publishing from a STACKS link.
Creating STACKS URLs
You may create your own STACKS links to IOP journals using the protocol
outlined below. Please note that a different syntax is
used for the electronic-only titles published in partnership with SISSA.
If you have any queries regarding our linking protocol, please contact
custserv@iop.org
Link to a Journal
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name
where journal abbreviated name is the abbreviated name, online or print
ISSN of an IOP journal. A full listing of all journal name abbreviations and
ISSNs is available at: http://www.iop.org/EJ/archive
Links to the available volumes for the journal specified.
Example: Link to Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General
http://stacks.iop.org/JPhysA or
http://stacks.iop.org/1361-6447
Link to a Volume
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name/volume
where volume is a journal volume number.
Links to the available issues for the volume specified.
Example: Link to Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, Vol 30
http://stacks.iop.org/JPhysA/30
Link to an Issue
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name/volume/i=issue
where issue is the journal issue number.
Links to the Table of Contents for the issue specified.
Example: Link to Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, Vol 30, No. 1
http://stacks.iop.org/JPhysA/30/i=1
Link to an Article
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name/volume/page
where page is the first page number.
Links to the article starting at the page specified. (If the page cannot be
resolved, a list of issues with page ranges within the volume will be
displayed.) The title, author and abstract are displayed. If you subscribe to
the journal and are registered for access to Electronic Journals, a link to
the full text (Adobe Acrobat PDF) and HyperCite® references will
also be displayed. Please note that letter characters used in page numbers are
case sensitive and do require the prefix character in the example of a letter
(L), note (N) or review (R).
Example: Link to Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 30 No 7 (7
April 1997) L167-L172
http://stacks.iop.org/JPhysA/30/L167
Always link to the latest issue
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name/latest
Links to the latest complete issue of the specified journal.
Example: Link to latest issue of Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and
General
http://stacks.iop.org/JPhysA/latest
Always link to the current accelerated issue
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name/accel
Links to the current accelerated issue of the specified journal, if available.
If no accelerated issues are available, the latest complete issue is provided.
Example: Link to the current accelerated issue of Classical and Quantum
Gravity
http://stacks.iop.org/CQG/accel
Syntax for linking to electronic-only titles
An alternative STACKS syntax is used for two electronic-only titles, where the
standard bibliographic information of volume, issue and page number are not
applicable:
- Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics
- Journal of High Energy Physics
- Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment
To link to one of these journals, use
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name
This is the same format as for all other IOP journals.
To link to the articles published in a particular year, use
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name/year
where year is the four-digit year, e.g. 2003.
To link to the articles published in a particular month, use
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name/year/i=month
where month is a two-digit code, e.g. 01 for January or 12 for December.
To link to an article, use
http://stacks.iop.org/journal abbreviated name/
volume/i=month/a=article number
where article number is a code assigned to the article when it is
published online.
Subscribing to STACKS
If you wish to download preformatted links to IOP journals, in either CSV or
XML format, you may subscribe to the STACKS
alerting service. The metadata supplied via STACKS may also include abstracts,
if you choose. To enable you to keep your links up to date, regular updates of
the latest links for your selected journals will be e-mailed to you in the
format you require.
To subscribe to STACKS please contact
Judith Barnsby, stating your
institution name and address, contact details, your Electronic Journals
Site Key (if
applicable) and the journals that you are interested in. We can then activate
your STACKS account and help you set up automatic updates for the journals of
your choice.
Open Archives Initiative
Our Electronic Journals service is compliant with the
Open Archives Initiative
(OAI) technical framework. IOP metadata currently adheres to versions 1.1 and
2.0 of the OAI Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).
If you are interested in harvesting our OAI metadata, please contact
custserv@iop.org.
