David Thornton, Bilkent University, Turkey
David Thornton, Library Director, Bilkent University, Turkey
Q: How long have you worked in your current job?
A: I have been the Library Director for two years, but have been teaching at Bilkent University for 11 years. I am a historian and was asked by our Rector to become Director in order to bring the users' perspective to the running of the Library.
Q: Which fictional character would you most like to be?
A: I have been a big Spider-Man fan for almost 30 years, but I am not sure I would like to be Peter Parker. So, instead, I'll opt for Sherlock Holmes.
Q: What are you most afraid of?
A: Something bad happening to my two kids. Once you become a parent, your perspective on everything completely changes.
Q: Name one place that you would like to go back to?
A: This is a difficult question, but I guess it should be Paris. My wife and I were married in Paris, but we have not been back for over seven years. It has great character and a wonderful atmosphere.
Q: What is the last film you watched?
A: The last film I watched from beginning to end, on a rare trip to the cinema, was Slumdog Millionaire.
Q: How do you like to relax after work?
A: When I get a chance, I like to practise on my mountain dulcimer and read Spider-Man comics or grammars of Oriental languages.
Q: Can you highlight three qualities of your institution?
A: Bilkent University has many qualities. Foremost for me is its sense of community: it is like an extended family. Secondly is the desire to improve: to improve in all areas of academic life. Bilkenters are never allowed to rest on their laurels for too long! And, lastly, personally I like Bilkent's diversity: East meets West here, if I may be permitted to use a cliche.
